By July 1943, full production was finally achieved. Ithaca didn’t procure enough manufacturing equipment to meet their schedules, and early pistols produced in 1942 used WWI surplus Colt receivers, and in early 1943 used slides and receivers purchased from Colt. Early in WWII, Colt couldn’t produce enough pistols for the military, and in 1942, contracts were let to Remington Rand, Ithaca, and the Union Switch and Signal Company to produce pistols. They gained a reputation as a reliable handgun with plenty of stopping power, and are held in high regard by those who have used them. Overall, this pistol rates in about Fine Plus condition. The grip screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. The knurling in the mainspring housing shows light wear.
The hammer knurling shows moderate wear, the recoil spring plug knurling shows light wear and the magazine release knurling is sharp. The slide serrations are relatively sharp. There are several light handling marks scattered over the slide and frame, with a scratch through the finish on the left side of the trigger guard and a mark through the finish underneath the slide latch. There is thinning on the front edges of the slide and frame, the top edges of the slide and the edges of the trigger guard. Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 90-92% of its metal finish. The front half of the slide is slightly darker than the back half, a result of the heat treating process on the slide.įinish Originality: The finish is original with sharp, clear stampings on the frame and slide.īore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. Type of Finish: The pistol has a grey parkerized finish and the barrel has a black oxide (blued) finish. The grips rate in about Excellent overall condition.
The checkering shows very light wear with a mar in the front lower corner of the left grip. There is a light handling mark in the smooth bottoms of the left grip. Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered reddish brown plastic. The rear sight is a square notch dovetailed into the slide. Sights / Optics: The front sight is a short blade with a mild ramp that has fine serrations fixed to the slide. The left side of the barrel lug is marked “P” and the right side “HS”, indicating it was made by High Standard, who supplied barrels to Ithaca and Remington. The flat on the top of the frame in front of the hammer is marked “G” and the round part under the barrel is marked “T”, “T” and with an inspection mark.
